CV Guide

The eurpeople CV guide aims to give you advice about writing your CV and includes information on content, layout and design.

Your CV is a key marketing tool designed to sell your skills and experiences. The main purpose of your CV is to make a strong first impression and to convince the customer to interview you. For these reasons it is imperative that your CV is well presented, well structured, concise, positive and interesting.

You are also strongly advised to take the effort to understand and research the role you are applying for and then to tailor the CV to highlight your key skills within these areas. Imagine yourself as the customer for a moment and try to think about what you would want to see in a CV.

A guide to structuring your CV

  • Personal Details
  • Education & Training Summary
  • Career Summary & Objectives
  • Key Achievements
  • Career History
  • Personal Interests

For advice on what content to include in your CV follow these guidelines

  • Ideally, your CV should contain no more than 2 pages
  • Your CV should be honest and factual
  • Page one should contain sufficient personal information so as to allow potential employers to contact you easily. Include: Full name, Address, Contact details (Daytime & Evening telephone numbers / email), Nationality including work permit / Visa Status for foreign nationals and Marital Status
  • Choose a clear and concise presentation format enabling you to highlight key skills, key achievements and / or key attributes
  • Your employment history should be detailed in chronological order with your most recent assignment / job shown first
  • Your achievements should be written concisely, bullet-pointed and should highlight your role, job description and achievements within the role. When your experience demonstrates your suitability for the role applied for and enhances your chance of selection be sure to include this information near the top of the CV
  • Be sure to include training or skills development events you have attended
  • List all professional memberships and relevant qualifications

What NOT to include in your CV

  • Photos…unless specifically required by the customer
  • Negative information or personal opinion. Quite often this type information can be misinterpreted
  • Salary levels and salary progression. This type of information should be held back for later discussions
  • Information that is irrelevant or portrays you negatively
  • Unaccounted for gaps in your CV
  • References – More often that not the customer will request these at the offer stage and as such you will have ample time to contact your referee

CV presentation

When you submit a hard copy CV to a potential employer it will be the first thing that they have with which to make their first impression and therefore you need to present your CV to the best of your ability and ensure that it is user friendly. For example:

  • Use good quality paper
  • Print your CV in black ink on white paper. Covering letters should use identical stationery
  • Ensure your CV is laid out neatly and that it is not cluttered
  • Ensure margins are not too deep or too narrow
  • Avoid lengthy paragraphs – be concise
  • Use an easy to read font such as Times New Roman or Arial
  • Avoid using a type size that is less than 11pt
  • Check for spelling mistakes and / or any other errors. A lack of care and attention can potentially cost you a job

Interview Guide

Interview process

How successful you are in your interview will depend on the quality of your preparation. As the old adage goes, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

Interview preparation

Prior to your interview, take the time to familiarise yourself with your CV, thereby ensuring that you can talk in greater detail with regards to the content and information already supplied. You are also advised to research and analyse what you know about the company and then to decide which aspects of your experience to highlight, tailoring it to their requirements. Most companies expect to see that you’ve done some research before the interview.

Other tips include

  • Use the internet to research the company’s site and other relevant information sites
  • Research the press and trade journals for relevant industry information and developments
  • Where possible, research the people you will be meeting and the company culture

Anticipate questions

Based on your CV content, type of company and the job applied for, try to anticipate questions that the interviewer may ask you.

Typical questions may include:

  • What qualifications or experience do you possess and how can it be applied to the job you have applied for?
  • Your favourite job? Your least favourite job? Reasons for your answers?
  • Give examples where you have showed initiative?
  • Explain why you applied for the position?
  • What criteria are most important to you in a job?

It is also advisable to identify any topics that may create problems for you and to ensure you have a pre-scripted answer. “Have you ever been made redundant?” “What do you think of your current boss?” “Are you ready for a job like this?” Being able to give brief, focused and reassuring answers to sensitive questions like these will greatly improve your chance of success.

NEVER talk down your previous employers!

The successful interview

Planning = Interview Success

Careful planning, preparation and research will give you confidence in an interview; ensuring the situation is less intimidating than you may have expected.
